Bettys Cottage's Wonderful Location

Wensley is a charming village with lots of long-standing local residents, providing a traditional experience with a very warm welcome.  The area is very peaceful and quiet, with miles of beautiful footpaths to enjoy from the door.

Bettys Cottage is just a half an hour walk, or a very short drive, to the village of Winster, a charming and picturesque village with a rich history, with over 70 listed buildings and stone cottages, lining its narrow streets, making it one of the most idyllic settings in the Peak District.  Here you will find The Miners Standard which is both a café and pub!  Winster also has a handy village store which, in keeping with tradition, is community run by the locals and supplies local produce such as meats, breads, pastries, pies, vegetables, ales, and much more much – the perfect place to stock up during your stay at Bettys Cottage!

Just a ten-minute stroll in the other direction, you’ll reach Darley Bridge, a wonderful village, set on the banks of the River Derwent.  Here you will find two village pubs, The Square and Compass and The Three Stags Head, both  serving delicious home cooked food, ideally for those preferring to dine out during their stay.

Venturing slightly further afield, Betty’s Cottage is perfectly positioned between two of Derbyshire’s most popular towns, with Matlock just a 10-minute drive and Bakewell just 15 minutes. 

Matlock has a great selection of independent shops, bars and eateries, together with a boating lake, whilst it’s neighbour, Matlock Bath has a real seaside feel with amusement arcades and fish and chip shops – an essential meal for any visit to Matlock!

The market town of Bakewell, is many independent shops and makes for a wonderful day out, particular on Market Days, where you’ll find all kinds of bargains and produce from local traders.   Of course, the essential delicacy for a visit to Bakewell is trip to The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop – which will you choose, the pudding or the tart?

For those who like to explore the grandeur of a country house, you’ll be spoilt for choice with both Haddon Hall and Chatsworth House being just a 15 minute drive from Bettys Cottage.  Haddon Hall is one of the most beautiful medieval manor houses in England, with the most picturesque gardens, regular events and a wonderful restaurant to dine in.  Chatsworth House is regarded as The Jewell of The Peak District with its impressive architecture, stunning gardens, and acres of deer park, ideal for relaxing with a picnic by the side of the river.  Here you’ll also find a farm shop selling delicious local produce, and a fabulous farm park and play area that children will enjoy.

There are many nearby attractions for everyone to enjoy at Bettys Cottage, that are just a 10-15 minute drive, such as Peak Rail, Matlock Farm Park and the impressive Heights of Abraham.

However, for those who simply want to park up and enjoy the landscape that surrounds you at Bettys Cottage, you won’t be disappointed!  There are many routes to enjoy, such as stunning Stanton Moor with its breathtaking heather in the summer months, and the historic Nine Ladies Stone Circle, and impressive Robin Hood’s Stride!

Maybe enjoy the circular route to Bonsall, which is particularly impressive late spring, as hedgerows are lined with cow parsley and the fields carpeted with buttercups!  However, right on your doorstep is Clough Wood, which a gorgeous walk at all times of year, but especially beautifully when covered with a blanket of stunning bluebells in the spring!

Whatever time of year you choose to visit Bettys Cottage, the everchanging landscape is always beautiful throughout all of the seasons, and there is plenty to do come rain or shine!
